The Cherokees of South Carolina

The Cherokees of South Carolina serve as the sponsoring organization of the

the "Trail of Tears" sites and location within the state of South Carolina for inclusion
in the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail as it is administered by the United States
National Park Service. The Tribe has also sent a representative to the 1997 South
Carolina Institute for Community Scholars in the Traditional Arts, sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission and the State-wide organization, Collaborative for Community Trust. Tribal members of the Cherokees of South Carolina are also members of Native American professional organizations and associations including: National Indian Educational Association (NIEA), American Indian Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, American Indian Society of Washington, American Indian Physicians Association, Native American Journalist Association, Unity/United Indian Tribal Youth Organization, National Museum of the American Indian, and Atlatl, Inc. (the National Indian Arts Service Agency). The Tribe has raised money for Native American charitable organizations including- Running Strong for Indian Youth /Christian Charities and Billy Mills, St. Labre Indian School, Red Cloud Indian School, and the Native American Heritage Association.

As in ancient times, The South Carolina Cherokees continue to look to our Clan Mothers for guidance and leadership. Our previous Clan mother, Amanda Stegall Allen (1874-1961) was born in Easley, South Carolina. Presently the Clan Mother is Amanda Allen Taylor who is 92 years old and was born in Seneca and presently resides in Columbia. Consequently we have the last hundred years in the keen memory of our current Nonagenarian Clan Mother. The Cherokee systems of governance, religion and social order is based on the Clan system, of which the Clan Mother is the head.
