The
Cherokees
of South Carolina
Those
that remained would be legally reclassified as "Free
People of Color" by Census takers and
governmental agencies, yet they were never to forget
their culture, history, and their Cherokee heritage.
The
present-day tribal organzation, The Eastern Cherokee.,
Southern Iroquois & United Tribes of South Carolina,
Inc. have over two hundred of actual Tribal oral and
documented history. This organization is incorporated in
the State of South Carolina and has Tax Exempt status
with the federal government as a (501) (3) (C). It serves
as the corporation for the governance of the Cherokees
of South Carolina's Tribal Council. With an
elected Tribal Chief/CEO and a Tribal Council made up of
Elders and Clan Mothers. The organization is "body
politic" and corporate... having perpetual
duration... for religious, educational, social,
fraternal, charitable or other eleemosynary
purpose."
The Cherokees of South Carolina are
acknowledged by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of
North Carolina and the United
Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma and
both tribal leaders of these federally recognized tribal
groups presently preside on the Honorary Advisory Board
of Regents for the South Carolina organization.

In addition, The Cherokees of South Carolina are
recognized and acknowledged by the Governor of the State
of South Carolina, David Beasley. In a proclamation he
states,
"There are seven organized groups
who are organized and incorporated in the state of
South Carolina as "body politic"
and who maintain the history, culture, lifestyles and
unique heritage of South Carolina Native American
people... including... the Cherokee Indian Tribe of
South Carolina... and the Eastern Cherokee,
Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina
Inc. annually sponsors a statewide observance of
National American Indian Heritage Month."
The Cherokees of
South Carolina are an active organizational member of the
National Congress
of American Indians, the oldest and largest national
organization established in 1944 and comprised of
representatives of and advocates for national, regional,
and local Tribal concerns. The Cherokees of South
Carolina also hold membership in the Archeological Society
of South Carolina, and the National Historic
Trust and Preservation.
